No money? Barcelona silenced critics, completed the transfer of Anthony Gordon for 80 million euros
FC Barcelona have completed their first signing of the transfer window, officially unveiling Anthony Gordon on Friday following the England winger’s landmark move from Newcastle United. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Spanish champions, with the deal reportedly worth an initial €80 million plus add-ons.
The transfer is another major statement from Barcelona, who continue to reshape their squad around a younger core while building on recent domestic success, despite continued scrutiny of the club’s finances and repeated criticism from rivals and some fans over alleged payment delays and financial instability.
“I’ve been excited to play for Barca since I was three,” Gordon said during his unveiling, as quoted by Reuters. “I wanted to speak Spanish because as a child I believed I would play football for Barca. I used to say to my physio at Newcastle every day: ‘One day I will play for Barca, so I want to learn Spanish’.”
Gordon leaves Newcastle after a productive spell in the Premier League, scoring 39 goals and providing 28 assists in 152 appearances since joining from Everton in 2023. He also helped the club end a 70-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup last season.
“I wanted to speak Spanish for this moment,” said a jubilant Gordon, speaking in partially fluent Spanish. “Playing with players like Lamine Yamal is very exciting. The more quality players you have around you, the better you become. They are the best in the world.”
MORE SPEED ON BOOTS?
Barcelona trust Gordon’s pace, pressing intensity and direct attacking style will add a new dimension to their front line. He has had a strong season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League games.
In their official statement, the club highlighted his consistency and performances against them in Europe. “He came to the club after being Newcastle United’s top scorer and top dribbler last season. Gordon impressed in his three appearances against Barca in the Champions League last season.”
Gordon has attracted interest from several top European clubs, with Bayern Munich among those linked earlier in the window. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe also admitted discussions over his future are ongoing, suggesting a summer exit is a possibility.
Instead, Barcelona secured his signatureadding another England international to the growing foreign contingent alongside Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Ivan Toney.
