Why did USCIS update the rule?
USCIS introduced the latest rule with citing public health. On April 4, 2024, the mandate was updated to determine that the I-693 form was properly completed and signed by a civil surgeon 1. November 2023 or later was valid indefinitely. This allowed the applicant to use this form as evidence that they were not inadmissible for the purposes of future immigration benefits on the basis of health.
On December 2, 2024, USCIS published a request that applicants have to submit the I-693 form when they submit the I-485 form.
11 June 2025 USCIS explained that previous policy was “too wide and could potentially endanger public health in the United States”.
“By limiting the period of validity only to the current application or request for immigration, we ensure that foreigners receive early and proper medical examination and treatment that protects public health,” USCIS said.
