Bidadi Project: Final announcement on acquisition of remaining villages

The Karnataka government has issued a final notification to acquire the remaining 1,895 acres of land in Bidadi for the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township (GBIT) project, also known as the Bidadi township project, amid sustained protests by farmers.

The new notification covers the revenue villages of Bairamangala and Kanchugaranahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru. This completed the final notification process for all nine revenue villages covering an area of ​​7,343 acres. The project requires a total of 9,640 acres. The remaining land is owned by the Government of Karnataka.

The development comes amid protests by farmers who have been opposing the project near Bairamangala Circle for over 550 days. An attempt by protesting farmers to block the highway in Bidadi recently led to chaos after police action.

However, farmers are unhappy with the latest development and have accused the state government of “defeat”.

Prakash HG, one of the protesting farmers, questioned the state government about going ahead with the project despite promising to assess its merits and demerits.

“They have only constituted a committee on July 14, which also recently invited objections from all of us. Even before its report came out, these notices were issued,” he told The Hindu, adding that the government does not know how to keep its promises.

Sources from the implementing agency Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) said that work has not been stopped and that compensation has been paid to farmers who have given up their land. “We don’t have to stop work completely,” the official said.
