When the Union’s government is preparing for the initiation of the first census in India, the Nair Service Society (NSS), it sent letters to the President, Vice -President and Prime Minister, and called on them to resign from the census and restrict the census to collect demographic data about the population of the country.
A letter signed by the Secretary -General of the NSS G. Sukumaran Nair said that the census based on the castel is contrary to the principles of the Constitution and the risks dividing people on the basis of caste and religion. It also attracts parallels to the British colonial era and resembles the 1931 municipal census, aimed at separating voters by separating constituents on the basis of religion.
“The municipal census would therefore lead to the division of the country into the municipal and religious line. Society will be fragmented on the basis of caste and religion that would always endanger the integrity and brotherhood of the nation,” he said.
He also added that the imposition of caste and religious identity by the state through caste census would postpone citizens of caste and religious suffering that would sell a deep position of nationality.
“The concept of equality enshrined in Article 14 guarantees protection against discrimination on the basis of caste, religion, descent or place of birth, which strongly repeated according to Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution. Equal and Economic Society, which is the main interest of governance, cannot be based on caste and religion. “He said.
According to Mr. Nair, the collection of any other demographic information in relation to the individual would attack his personal autonomy of privacy. “Therefore, a step towards the caste census to induce caste and religion of citizens would violate the right to privacy guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution,” he said.
The SAC tightens its attitude against the caste census, although various other community and social organizations, including SNDP and other back caste, expressed the project. Meanwhile, sources also indicated the SAC examining legal steps if the government continued to census.
