Namibia script history with first ever ODI series win against Ireland

Namibia made history on Sunday November 1 when they beat Ireland by five wickets in the fifth and final ODI in Windhoek to clinch the series 3-2. The win marked Namibia’s first ever bilateral ODI series triumph and their first series win against a Full Member nation.

After losing the opener by 55 runs, Namibia bounced back impressively to win the second ODI by 31 runs and the third by 63 runs to take a 2–1 lead in the series. Ireland responded with an impressive 130-run victory in the fourth match to level the match at 2–2 and force a decider.

The result was particularly significant for Namibia, who were playing only their second bilateral ODI series. Their previous match against South Africa in September ended in a 0-3 defeat. However, they showed a marked improvement against Ireland and held their nerve when it mattered most.

SMIT, BRASSELL IN IRELAND’S DECISION

Ireland won the toss and elected to bat but struggled to build a partnership against a disciplined Namibian bowling attack. They were bundled out for just 129 in 33.1 overs, with Jordan Neill top-scoring with 33 off 25 balls. Cade Carmichael contributed 27, while Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker 21 and 20 respectively.

JJ Smit led the demolition job with figures of 4 for 20 while Jack Brassell took three wickets for 15 runs. Smit struck the decisive blow in the 23rd over when he dismissed Tucker, Curtis Campher and George Dockrell in a four-ball volley. Ireland slumped from 84 for three to 84 for six and dramatically lost control of the innings.

Brassell provided excellent support and removed Carmichael before returning to help wrap up the Irish innings. The visitors could not recover from the collapse and were bowled out for a subpar total, leaving Namibia with a direct target.

Namibia made light work of the chase, reaching 131 for five in just 21.2 overs to seal a 172-ball victory. Louren Steenkamp anchored the innings with 46 off 44 deliveries, hitting six fours and a six. Captain Gerhard Erasmus added to the power with a brisk 30 off 18 balls, while Michael van Lingen contributed 15.

Zane Green remained unbeaten at number 11 and finished the contest in style as he hit a six to complete Namibia’s historic triumph.

Smit was named Man of the Match for his match-winning spell, while Erasmus was awarded Player of the Series. The Namibia captain finished the series with 263 runs and four wickets, underscoring his all-round contribution to the landmark achievement.

For Namibia, the series win marks a significant milestone in their progress in international cricket. Having become the first team to win an ODI series against a full-member nation, they will take considerable confidence from the performance as they look to make their mark against the sport’s established sides.
