Alcaraz crushes De Minaur to seal Vienna title, completes perfect ATP 500 season

Carlos Alcaraz capped a dominant week in Vienna with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over Alex de Minaur in Sunday’s final to complete an unbeaten season at ATP 500 events and extend his winning streak at the level to 26 matches.

The Spaniard needed just 97 minutes to get past De Minaur to claim his fourth title of the season and 28th of his career. He did not lose a set in any of his five matches at the Erste Bank Open, making it another dominant title run for the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Alcaraz has already won the ATP 500 titles in Doha and Tokyo this season. His victory in Vienna took his record to 16-0 in 2026, capping a perfect campaign in the category.

Once Alcaraz found his rhythm, there was no doubt about the outcome. He broke De Minaur in the opening game and quickly built up a double-break lead as the Australian struggled to match his opponent’s aggressive hitting.

Alcaraz was particularly sharp in the first set, using his power and accuracy to push De Minaur deep down the baseline. The Australian struggled to stay in the game, but the Spaniard’s shooting proved too much as he wrapped up the set 6-1.

De Minaur put up a better fight in the second set. The 27-year-old saved break points in the second, fourth and eighth games to stay in touch, but Alcaraz continued to put him under pressure. The Spaniard finally broke through in the 10th game, converting his first championship point after winning a superb full-court rally.

Alcaraz won 81 percent of his first serve points and finished with 29 points from 36 such serves. The win also extended his head-to-head record against De Minaur to 7-0. He remains unbeaten against Australian opposition in tour-level matches, with 15 wins.

After the final, Alcaraz said he was well aware of the challenge De Minaur presented, especially with his speed and ability to return difficult shots.

“My team and I know Alex de Minaur’s level very well. His style is really dangerous. Really flat balls that slide a lot down the court, really low. It’s really hard to increase the power I want in every shot and every ball. He’s really fast, so you have to earn every point,” Alcaraz said.

“I tried to be aggressive and show him that if he wants to win, he has to play better than me, more aggressive, tougher and smarter than me. I’m really happy that I found my way at the end, I played great and of course it was a really emotional and amazing week for me.”

ALCARAZ JOINS THE ELITE COMPANY

The Vienna title moved Alcaraz’s ATP 500 tally to 11, placing him fourth on the all-time list since the streak began in 2009.

Roger Federer leads the standings with 16 titles, followed by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who each have 15. Andy Murray is fifth with nine.

Alcaraz has now won 26 consecutive matches at the ATP 500 level. His last defeat in the category came against Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April 2025.

The Spaniard will take that form to next week’s Paris Masters, having already secured a place at the final ATP Finals in Turin. They head into the final part of the season with a 38-5 win-loss record and another title under their belt.
