Two persons held for possession of country-made weapons and explosives

Two persons, including a farmer, were arrested near Pallikonda and Pernambut towns in Vellore on Saturday for possession of two country-made weapons and crude bombs.

Forest officials identified the arrested persons as U. Chandra, 21, a tribal from the Irular community, and G. Srinivasan, 39, a farmer.

Initial investigation revealed that Srinivasan was cultivating paddy and groundnut on his two-acre farm land. Forest officials said acting on a tip-off, a special team conducted searches of his house and agricultural land and recovered country-made weapons, explosives, nets, flashlights and batteries.

Forest officials said Srinivasan got the weapons from his contacts in Kerala. He used the pellets to hunt monkeys, rabbits and spotted deer in the forests surrounding the Jawadhu Hills.

In a separate incident, forest officials arrested Chandra, who was allegedly roaming with a country weapon in the area. The team apprehended him during a regular patrol and seized a country weapon, bullets and explosives.

Forest officials said both the arrested persons have been lodged in Vellore Central Jail. Another probe is underway.
