AC Milan ended Inter’s unbeaten run with an emphatic victory in the Derby della Madonnina

AC Milan won the Derby della Madonnina as they beat Inter Milan 3-1 at the San Siro to end their arch-rivals’ unbeaten start to the Serie A season. Christian Pulisic and Diego Moreira led the charge as Milan gloated and dealt a major blow to Inter for the title.

It took less than five minutes for Milan to take the lead, Pulisic opening the scoring after being caught by Moreira’s excellent cross from the right. The Belgian then turned provider again, this time from a cleverly worked corner, setting up Adrien Rabiot for a superb finish in the 10th minute.

Inter needed a response and found it through Alessandro Bastoni, who headed in from a corner in the 22nd minute after Manuel Akanji’s tackle. The goal sparked a spell of sustained pressure from the visitors, but Mike Maignan stood firm with a number of important saves to keep Milan in front.

Just when Inter seemed to be gaining momentum, Moreira struck again. The former Chelsea full-back capped an impressive first-half display by curling a free-kick into the net in the 43rd minute to restore Milan’s two-goal cushion and give the hosts a commanding position at the break.

MOREIRA RUNS THE SHOW

Moreira was at the heart of Milan’s attacking display, assisting both of the opening goals before getting himself on the scoresheet. His contribution proved decisive in the derby where Inter had plenty of chances but struggled to get past Maignan.

The Milan goalkeeper was particularly busy before the break, denying Djed Spence from close range and saving attempts by Hakan Calhanoglu and other Inter attackers. He continued to frustrate the visitors after the restart, while Strahinja Pavlovic also made an important save to protect the lead.

Inter kept pushing for promotion back into the competition, with Marcus Thuram and Andy Diouf among those trying their luck. They also thought they had been awarded a late penalty following a handball appeal, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review confirmed the ball had hit Mario Gil’s centre.

INTER LOSE TOP PLACE AFTER DEFEAT

The result ended Inter’s nine-match unbeaten start to the Serie A season and saw them lose their place at the top of the table. They dropped to second place with Lazio moving above them on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Milan climbed to fourth place and moved ahead of Como, who still had a game in hand. The win also extended their unbeaten run in the derby to five games, giving them further reason to celebrate a night to remember at the San Siro.
