The first import container arrives in Vizhinjam

A vessel carrying the first import consignment to Vizhinjam since the start of full scale export-import (EXIM) cargo operations at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in August called at the port here on Saturday, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the state’s maritime trade.

The first import container to Vizhinjam was booked from Ningbo, China and arrived aboard MSC Sabrina III. She was booked by BP2G Logistics and Ship Chandlers Private Limited, a Thiruvananthapuram-based start-up, on behalf of city-based trading company M/s Alteir Group.

The shipment contains a full container (FCL) of structural building boards used in the construction industry as an alternative to conventional plywood.

With import operations now underway in Vizhinjam, containers can be unloaded, handled and transported directly to markets across Kerala. This will reduce the dependence of local entrepreneurs on distant ports, helping them to reduce transport costs and delivery times. Revenues generated from cargo handling and logistics activities will also remain state owned.

The development is expected to create employment opportunities for customs brokers, freight forwarders, shippers, warehousemen and port workers while strengthening Kerala’s position as a maritime trade destination, authorities said.
