Former ASHOK Lavasa Commissioner of June 10 said it may not be fair to say that the Indian Election Commission (ECI) did not take over the initiatives to propose election reforms in the country. Lavasa, however, proposed that it could be fair to say that the vote panel did not perform these reforms so much.
“If you ask the Indian election commissions, they will give you sufficient cases with data where the election reforms have proposed to the government, and repeatedly follow these reforms, but that is the extent they can go, and that’s what they do,” Lavasa said.
Former Election Commissioner spoke during the webinar to “Is the time to give more teeth?” It is organized by the Election Association of Watch Psog for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
“Even today, there must be a list of 40-50 election reforms that lie about the government that ECI regularly pushed,” Lavasa said, answering the question of the initiative in the poll on election reforms.
Lavasa resigned as an election commissioner in August 2020 after his appointment by Vice President at the Asian Development Bank in July. Lavasa, an IAS officer in 1980, was appointed an electoral commissioner in 2018 and was in a run to become the main election commissioner when CEC Sunil left in April 2021.
“So it may not be fair to say that they did not make the initiative to propose election reforms. It could be fair to say that they did not push it enough, but I do not know what they are pushing enough,” he said.
What is a note?
Since 2013, none of the above or note has been included as a choice on ballots in Indian elections. By expressing a note for a note, the voter may decide not to support any candidate in the elections.
It could be fair to say that they did not push these reforms sufficiently.
Since its introduction, a note has gained popularity among voters, has secured more votes than some candidates in the Lok Sabha elections and the assembly, and in some cases more votes than the winning candidate in the Panchayat elections. However, the notes are ineffective and raise questions about the validity of the possibility.
“But despite some of the Supreme Court’s efforts, a spirit that is worth suggested that political parties throw themselves to improve the quality of candidates, I do not think that this purpose served and therefore needs more teeth,” Lavasa said.
