Manchester United stumble against Chelsea as pressure mounts on Michael Carrick

The pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has intensified after his side suffered a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The loss extended United’s winning streak to nine games in all competitions, leaving Carrick facing fresh questions over his future as the club continued to struggle for consistency.

United’s board decided to stay with Carrick despite a humiliating 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth last weekend and a previous 4-1 Champions League win by Como. However, another setback against Chelsea did little to ease the pressure. United are provisionally 16th in the Premier League table with seven points from nine games, just one point above the relegation zone, while Chelsea have climbed to fourth place with 16 points.

United got off to a promising start and created several chances in the first half, but their inability to convert chances proved costly in the end.

CHELSEA PUNISH UNITED’S MISSED CHANCES

Bruno Fernandes has returned to the starting eleven and captain after the recent conflict with Carrick. The visitors looked lively going forward, with Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Amad having opportunities to break the deadlock. Cunha even found the net but his attempt was ruled out for offside.

However, United’s missed chances came back four minutes after the restart. Morgan Rogers collected the ball just inside United’s half, drove through a hesitant defense and lifted the ball gently over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to give Chelsea the lead.

United’s task became significantly more difficult in the 63rd minute when Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card after bringing down Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana in the penalty area. The incident also earned Chelsea a penalty, giving the hosts the opportunity to put the game out of United’s reach.

Cole Palmer stepped up to convert from the spot, despite keeper Lammens supporting his effort. Chelsea comfortably managed the rest of the game against 10-man United to secure all three points.

The defeat marked United’s third consecutive loss and extended their winless streak to nine games in all competitions, their longest such run since 1988. The pressure was evident at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea supporters jeered Carrick by chanting ‘You’ll be sacked in the morning’.

Carrick, who enjoyed a successful 12-year playing career at Manchester United, now faces an increasingly uncertain future as his team struggle to find results. After being backed by the board ahead of the Chelsea game, the manager will come under further scrutiny following another damaging performance.
