In a move aimed at providing financial security to women bereaved, the Telangana government has extended the ‘instant pension’ facility to more categories of social security pensioners, allowing eligible women to receive pension immediately after the death of their pensioner husband.
Who benefits?
The decision will benefit the families of disabled persons, toddy tappers, handlooms, dialysis patients and persons affected by HIV and filariasis.
“Till now, the facility was available only to the wives of deceased old age pensioners. The government has now extended it to other major categories of social security pensioners and issued guidelines through Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department,” the official said.
How will it work for women under and over 57?
According to revised guidelines issued a few days ago, women below 57 will be eligible for widow’s pension on the death of their pensioner husband, while women aged 57 and above will be eligible for old-age pensions.
How and where to apply?
Applicants in rural areas have to submit their applications to the respective panchayat secretaries, while those in urban areas should approach the bill collectors. The applications must be accompanied by the wife’s Aadhaar card, the first page of her bank passbook, the deceased husband’s Aadhaar card and his death certificate.
The concerned officials will verify the documents and upload the details on the Cheyutha portal. Pensions will be sanctioned after verification of eligibility.
The aim of the decision was to provide financial security to women who lose their spouse and to ensure that social support for their families continues without interruption.
