Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) Chief Coordinator Seeman on Friday indicated that he is open to accepting the support of DMK and AIADMK if they decide to support him in Ambasamudram Assembly constituency when the by-elections are held there. He recently indicated that he would run in a by-election.
Talking to reporters in Pasumpon after paying tributes to freedom fighter Muthuramaling Thevar, he wondered why he should not accept their support when he longed for an electoral victory.
DMK president and former chief minister MK Stalin, who also came here to pay his respects to the freedom fighter, did not directly respond to a query about Mr. Seeman’s support. When asked whether the NTK leader could support the DMK, he replied that the date of the by-elections should be announced first.
However, when asked if he would be willing to accept the support of the two Dravidian parties, Mr. Seeman said, “Someone who is hungry will not refuse the biryani offered to him.”
He clarified that his past criticism of DMK and AIADMK was ideological rather than personal. “I have criticized both parties, and even the TVK, but I have never had personal remarks about Mr. Stalin, (AIADMK leader) Edappadi K. Palaniswami or even brother Vijay (TVK leader and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay),” he explained.
“It is well known that we are ‘revolutionaries’, not conventional politicians, and I do not come from a political background like other leaders,” Seeman added. He also asked why a party with 36 thousand votes and 8.5% vote share would not be approached for an alliance when parties with only 1% or 2% vote share were routinely invited to join the alliance.
Mr. Seeman clarified that while NTK, DMK and AIADMK had not made any formal statement, it was evident that TVK had initiated the rumour. Pointing to the past elections, he asked why similar issues were not raised during the Erode East by-elections, in which the NTK went head-to-head against the DMK, while the TVK, AIADMK and BJP remained on the sidelines.
“I have decided to contest the Ambasamudram by-election because people have expressed their desire to see me in the assembly. If that is the case, why should I not face TVK directly? We will see who wins,” he said.
Mr. Stalin criticized the TVK government for its “failure” to maintain law and order and its “inability” to control rising inflation. He said people who had put their faith in TVK during the elections “on the basis of film clips” were now disappointed by its “mismanagement”.
Taking a jab at Mr Vijay’s modus operandi, he said: “Every morning he comes in a coat and suit as if going to an office and leaves in the evening.” Asked about the lack of police security provided to him, Mr. Stalin said he did not expect anything from the government as his party cadre and leaders accompanied him to ensure his security.
