Kerala Matsya Thzhilali Aikya Vedi demanded an increase in compensation announced by the government of fishermen affected by the sinking of a freight vessel off the coast of Kerala.
In his statement, State President Aica Vedi Charles George said that the government’s compensation is not insufficient. “The government easily took the incident and subsequent loss to fishermen,” he said. Mr. George pointed out that in several developing countries compensation paid for fishermen in similar incidents three times the cost of the shipping ship. He also criticized the Government Committee and said that it seemed that he had led any discussions with the transport company about compensation. Mr. George said that the captain of the vessel has not yet been arrested.
He added that a foreign company, which allegedly joined the shipping company, began to remove plastic plastic, which was washed ashore after the incident. He claimed that the company hired local fishermen for cleaning and pays them every 1,000 ₹, but without consulting either central or state government. This operation has already become a political problem, he said. Fishermen, added, did not get any protective equipment such as gloves.
Mr. George also demanded the creation of expert committees that include health and environmentalists to assess the potential health risks and impact on the environmental accumulation along the coast.
