Election results for 6 out of 8 seats have been declared in the Bihar Legislative Council polls. Elections were held for eight seats in Bihar, four seats each from graduate and teacher constituencies.
All MLCs of the Teachers constituency lost the election, while Janata Dal (United) candidate Neeraj Kumar retained his seat in the Patna Graduate constituency, which remained hotly debated due to the boycott of Mokam MLA Anant Singh, who was recently expelled from the JD(U) for campaigning against the party’s official candidate.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost its Patna Teachers constituency seat after 30 years as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Sanjeev Kumar defeated BJP candidate Nawal Kishore Yadav by 1,057 votes. Sanjeev Kumar’s elder brother Rajeev Kumar is also an MLC representing the Congress party.
The Congress party did not win any seat in this election and even lost its seat. Sitting MLC Madan Mohan Jha of the Congress party lost the Darbhanga Teachers constituency to Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party (JSP).
Similarly, Saran Teachers constituency, which was represented by Independent Aafaq Ahmad, lost to rebel BJP leader and Independent candidate Rahul Raj. Anand Pushkar of the JD(U) was the official candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
However, after winning the election, Mr Raj said it would have been better if the party had given him a ticket. He added that he has great respect for the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In Tirhut Teachers constituency, BJP candidate Narendra Kumar Singh defeated sitting MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh of Communist Party of India (CPI).
Out of the four seats in the teachers’ constituency, the NDA fielded candidates from JD(U) and BJP on two seats and the alliance managed to win only one seat. JD(U) failed to open its account.
A JSP victory in the Darbhanga Teachers constituency in the Mithila region will certainly pose a significant challenge to JD(U) national working president Sanjay Jha, who hails from the same region.
After his fourth consecutive victory in the Patna Graduate constituency, JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar met the party’s national president and former chief minister Nitish Kumar at his official residence to seek his blessings.
Congratulating him on his victory and wishing him all the best, Nitish Kumar urged him to continue his public service in accordance with the party’s core principle of nyay ke saath vikas (development with justice) and to always live up to the trust reposed in him by the public.
“I express my sincere gratitude to everyone for my fourth consecutive victory. I express my sincere thanks to the National President, Nitish Kumar ji, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary ji and Nishant Kumar ji and all NDA leaders for this unprecedented support. This victory is a collective trust, dedication and collective effort,” said Neeraj Kumar.
Reacting to Mokam’s victory, MLA Anant Singh said, “We didn’t bring votes from the shop and weigh them. The public is like God. If they vote, the candidate wins; if they don’t, the candidate loses.”
BJP’s NK Yadav secured victory in the Kosi Graduate constituency by defeating RJD’s Nitish Kumar by a margin of over 9000 votes.JSP candidate Rajnish Ranjan finished third.
In Darbhanga Graduate constituency, BJP candidate Sarvesh Kumar is leading by 1,291 votes against rival candidate Anil Jha of RJD, while in Tirhut Graduate constituency, independent candidate Bansidhar Brajwasi is leading by 5,705 votes against JD(U) candidate Abhishek Jha.
Reports from the counting center suggest that Sarvesh and Bansidhar will continue to lead till the counting ends. Out of the eight seats, the NDA is expected to win four seats, with two seats going to independents and one each to JSP and RJD candidates.
