A 22-year-old remand prisoner who escaped from police custody with handcuffs near Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur on Tuesday (October 27) evening was arrested after a massive manhunt.

Ashik, a native of Kolazhy, was nabbed from Padukad near Viyyur jail, police said.

Ashik was arrested by the Thrissur Medical College police on Wednesday in connection with the assault case. After the court sent him to judicial custody, he was taken to jail when he escaped from a police jeep near the jail premises.

Two police officers who were accompanying him chased him but failed to catch him. The handcuffs were later found abandoned.

Police launched a massive manhunt and eventually tracked down and arrested the escaped remand inmate.
