Chairman and Managing Director of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti met Angul (Odisha) District Collector Mohammad Abdaal Akhtar on Tuesday to discuss allotment of land and other support required for the company’s proposed projects in Odisha.

The plans include setting up a thermal power plant near the Naini coal mine, an R&R colony for project-affected families and a road to transport coal. The collector responded positively to the proposals and provided the necessary support.

Issues such as land acquisition, approvals and other requirements for the proposed works were discussed in the meeting which was also attended by Singareni directors Gowtam Potru and LV Suryanarayana, Executive Director (Movement for Coal) B. Venkanna, General Manager (Coordination) T. Srinivas, Naini General Manager Debdulal Baidya and others

The Singareni CMD asked the Collector to allot suitable land for an R&R colony for the 40 families displaced by the Naini coal mine. He also sought an early meeting of the Rehabilitation and Periphery Advisory Committee (RPDAC) to take decisions on the implementation of the R&R package, land acquisition for the colony and dealing with other matters related to rehabilitation.

In Singareni’s plan to set up a thermal power plant near the Naini coal mine, the company identified land in Tukuda and Jarapada villages as suitable for the project and asked the Collector for support in acquiring it. On the coal road, the CMD said Singareni has already deposited ₹35 crore for the proposed bypass between Chandipara and Jarapada villages, which will connect coal from Naini block to the nearby Jarapada railway junction.

The ČMD asked the concerned departments to support the completion of the road, which could serve as a coal corridor for other coal industries as well. He was also looking for suitable land for the Singareni office and staff colony in Odisha as the company was expanding its operations there.

He sought support for the construction of the Majhika bypass to transport coal without inconveniencing local residents and assured to provide the funds needed to acquire land for the road. Assuring the company of all necessary cooperation, the District Collector said he would support Singareni’s efforts to meet the energy requirements of the country.

A visit to a gasification station

The Singareni team later visited the Jindal coal gasification plant in Angul district, the country’s first coal gasification plant. They learned about the process of making gas from indigenous coal and its utilization by Jindal Steel.

The team also discussed with experts the prospects and feasibility of coal gasification with coal from the closed Singareni underground mines as well as the incentives offered by the central government. Singareni coal from the Naini mine is also transported to the Jindal plant.
