Fastest to 1000, 500 in powerplay: Sooryavanshi rewrites IPL record books in Qualifier 2
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued his amazing IPL 2026 season during Rajasthan Royals Qualifier 2 encounter against Gujarat Titans and broke several records with another remarkable knock. The 15-year-old fell short of the century once again, but only then added several significant milestones to his growing collection.
Seeing a slow start from the youngster, Mullanpur turn in another fiery 96 after hitting 47 balls in Qualifier 2 against GTthe innings also saw Sooryavanshi become the fastest batsman to 1000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced. He also became the first player in T20 history to score 500 runs in overs alone in a single tournament.
The latest feat came just two days after his breathtaking 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.
GT vs RR Qualifier 2: UPDATE | SCORECARD
Among the records and milestones achieved during the innings were:
- 440 – Fastest batter to 1000 IPL runs from balls faced, beating Andre Russell’s previous record of 545 deliveries.
- 23 – Second-fewest innings to reach 1000 IPL runs, behind only Shaun Marsh’s 21 innings.
- 3 – 90s dismissals in an IPL career, now level with KL Rahul, David Warner, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Glenn Maxwell, for the most in tournament history.
- 31 – Balls he managed to reach his fifty, the slowest half-century of Sooryavanshi’s IPL career.
- 47 – Most deliveries Sooryavanshi has faced in an IPL innings, surpassing the 38 balls he faced during his 93 in Jaipur earlier this month.
- 18 – Deepest bowled in an IPL innings, surviving till the 18th over for the first time.
- 500 – Became the first batsman in T20 history to score 500 overs in a single tournament.
- 776 – Number of runs scored in IPL 2026, taking his tally past 750, becoming one of the biggest individual seasons in the tournament’s history.
The innings was particularly impressive as it came in circumstances very different from most of Sooryavanshi’s explosive knocks this season. Gujarat Titans came into the match with a clear plan to deny him the momentum early and for a while it seemed to be working.
HOW SOORYAVANSHI THRASHED GT BOWLER
Unlike many of his previous innings, Sooryavanshi was made to work hard on his runs against Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada. The Gujarat pacers repeatedly hit disciplined lengths and prevented the teenager from getting his hands free in the opening overs.
His first six didn’t come until the 13th ball he faced, an unusually cautious start by his standards. Gujarat’s strategy looked even better when Rajasthan Royals lost Yashasvi Jaiswal 1 and Dhruv Jurel 7 in the powerplay.
But Sooryavanshi gradually overcame the control.
A 21-run over against Siraj shifted the momentum in Rajasthan’s favor and helped relieve the pressure that had built up during the opening overs. He reached his half-century in 31 balls, the slowest fifty of his IPL career, before changing gears dramatically.
Once Ravindra Jadeja settled in at the other end, Sooryavanshi launched a familiar attack. He smashed 46 runs off his next 15 deliveries, racing into the nineties and looking set for a third IPL hundred.
However, the teenager suffered another near miss when he fell in the 90s for the third time in the last four innings. Despite this disappointment, the innings once again highlighted why he has become the biggest story of IPL 2026.
At the time of writing, Sooryavanshi’s focus has already shifted to the field. Rajasthan Royals were preparing to defend 215 against Gujarat Titans, with the 15-year-old hoping his latest record-breaking effort would be enough to see them through to the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
