Free energy for farmers at risk: BRS

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has demanded that the Congress government immediately withdraw its proposal to set up a separate Farmers’ Distribution Company (Farmers’ DISCOM), alleging that the proposal is a deliberate attempt to eliminate the 24-hour c.

Former ministers Guntakandla Jagadish Reddy and Singireddy Niranjan Reddy, who represented the party before the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC), said it was part of a broader strategy to phase out electricity subsidies to the agriculture sector and pave the way for privatization of electricity distribution.

Speaking to the media later, Mr. Jagadish Reddy noted that the landmark initiative of providing free 24-hour electricity to agriculture was launched in 2017 by the KCR government and was successfully implemented without interruption for several years.

He argued that the real objective of the proposed third DISCOM is to separate the income-generating consumers from the subsidized agricultural connections, thereby isolating the agricultural sector. He rejected the government’s reasoning for the proposal, saying the reasons given were not based on facts. According to him, the proposed restructuring would seriously weaken the provision of services in rural areas.
