278 in a T20 match: 17-year-old Delhi cricketer Tanmay breaks records

Tanmay Chaudhary smashed 278 runs in one T20 innings and hit 22 fours and 27 sixes in the quarter-final of the Schools Total T20 tournament. The 17-year-old also hit eight consecutive sixes, hitting five in one before clearing the boundary three more times in the next.

The knock adds to an impressive run of performances in school cricket. Tanmay represented Delhi at Under-19 level and played for East Delhi Riders in the Delhi Premier League (DPL). His father, Satish Chaudhary, says the youngster has performed consistently and believes he has the potential to go much further.

SEVEN YEARS OF A SECOND JOB

Tanmay’s cricketing journey started when he was in 6th grade. His father enrolled him in the Modern School, Barakhamba, where he continued to develop his game. He also trains at Greaton Academy at Devra Sports.

“He has been playing for about seven years. I enrolled him in Modern School, Barakhamba, when he was in Class 6. He also trains at Greaton Academy at Devra Sports,” Satish told IndiaToday.in.

Tanmay has since represented Delhi at the Under-19 level, playing for East Delhi Riders in the DPL. He also appeared in two matches for the Delhi State side recently.

His father said the youngster’s performances had been consistent for some time. Tanmay hit six sixes in an innings in December, but the last quarter-final produced an even more remarkable sequence.

“He has been performing consistently well for quite some time and we have been watching his performances. He hit six sixes in an innings back in December. In this match he hit eight in a row, five in one and then another three in the next,” Satish said.

ANOTHER BIG SCORE IN SCHOOL CRICKET

A 278-run innings was followed by several other notable performances. Last year, while playing for Modern School, Barakhamba Road, in the Under-19 T20 competition, Tanmay smashed an unbeaten 228 off 74 balls against The Indian School.

He hit 23 fours and 20 sixes at a strike rate of 308.11. Modern School went on to score 394 in 20 overs to win by 367 runs.

Tanmay also scored 180 off 69 balls against Sri Ram Global, Delhi West in the ongoing Schools Total T20 tournament. Modern School won this match by 227 runs.

The school’s campaign began with a 124-run victory over Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj. Vinayak Choudhary scored 72 off 41 balls in this match and took two wickets. He then returned figures of four for four against Sri Ram Global, helping Modern School secure another convincing win.

Satish said his son has scored around 100 centuries in local cricket and registered double centuries at least 10-12 times.

“He scored about 100 centuries in local cricket and registered double centuries at least 10 to 12 times,” said Satish.

FROM SCHOOL CRICKET TO DPL

Tanmay also played in the Delhi Capitals Cup where he scored 180 and represented the Indian Public Schools’ Conference (IPSC) at the national level.

Satish said his son scored 120 runs against Karnataka in the IPSC national tournament. Tanmay was in Indore for another IPSC event at the time of the interview.

The youngster gained experience through school cricket, state level matches and DPL. The next challenge is to sustain the performance against stronger opposition and make the most of opportunities to progress further.

His father is convinced of his son’s potential. “He is a good player sir. We will all support him. He will go a long way. This is just the beginning,” Satish said.

He also talked about the opportunities that started coming Tanmay’s way. “Opportunities are coming and I can see and feel it. Things seem to fall into place by themselves,” Satish said.
