June 6 (Reuters) – The Department of Health in Texas reported no new measles on Friday, the first time the state did not notice an increase from the beginning of the focus in February.
The state, which is the epicenter of the current focus of measles, has a total of 742 confirmed cases on Friday.
The number of new cases is still decreasing, from an average of about 12 a day around the peak to less than one case a day recently, said Chris van Deusen, director of relations with the media department in Texas, Reuters in -mail.
“The fact that (we) had no new hospitalizations reported in more than two weeks, gives us confidence that there are still no large number of unseen cases,” Van Deusen said.
The United States is fighting one of the worst outbreaks of the highly contagious air infection it has seen, with more than 1,000 reported cases and three deaths.
Despite the slowdown of the spread of infection in Texas, the country continues to record a weekly increase in measles cases elsewhere.
The US Centers for Control and Prevention of Diseases said that a total of 1,168 confirmed measles were reported by 34 jurisdictions on Thursday, an increase of 80 cases since the previous update last week.
Since 2000, a single time infection has exceeded 1,000 stamps in 2019, when the country reported 1,274 cases.
In 2025, 17 outbreaks were defined as three or more related cases, CDC said.
Experts urged public health officials to provide urgent approval for highly effective vaccines.
