CSK appoints Albie Morkel as Zaheer Khan’s deputy, Mohit Sharma as bowling coach

Chennai Super Kings head coach Zaheer Khan has confirmed the appointment of former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma as the franchise’s bowling coach for IPL 2027 while hinting at a possible return of former CSK all-rounder Albie Morkel to the coaching role.

Minutes later, the Super Kings confirmed Albie’s appointment as Zaheer Khan’s replacement.

The five-time champions are overhauling their support staff after a disappointing run in recent seasons, with coach Zaheer given the freedom to assemble his own coaching staff after replacing Stephen Fleming as head coach. The franchise also confirmed the appointment of the former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as assistant coachwith the new look of behind-the-scenes staff taking shape ahead of the November 15 retention deadline.

Mohit’s appointment was highlighted during Zaheer’s visit to Chennai, where the new head coach interacted with the franchise’s mascot Lee in a promotional video. The announcement marks a return to familiar territory for the 38-year-old, who began his IPL career with CSK in 2013.

Mohit represented Chennai between 2013 and 2015 before returning for another stint in 2019. He subsequently enjoyed a successful run with Gujarat Titans, notably in 2023 when he played a key role in their run to the finals. His last IPL appearance came for Delhi Capitals and he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2025.

The former India pacer replaces Eric Simons, who served as CSK’s bowling coach under Fleming. Mohit brings extensive IPL experience to the role, having played 120 matches and taken 134 wickets in the tournament. His knowledge of the franchise could prove valuable as CSK look to rebuild their bowling unit and get back into contention.

ALBIE MORKEL IS BACK

CSK have taken a big step by bringing one of the team’s celebrated all-rounders into the coaching line-up. Ablie Morkel played for CSK from 2008 to 2013 and was an important member of the side during the successful years.

Morkel has remained associated with the Super Kings family through his other franchises. He recently took over as head coach of the Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 after Fleming stepped down from the role. His experience as a former international all-rounder and his knowledge of the franchise could make him a candidate for a role in Chennai’s revamped coaching set-up.

Meanwhile, CSK parted ways with long-time batting coach Michael Hussey as part of the restructuring. Hussey has been associated with the franchise as a player and coach for several years, taking over as batting coach in 2018. His departure follows that of Simons and fielding coach James Foster, who joined Fleming’s England Test coaching staff.

Batty’s arrival adds more experience to Zaheer’s team. The former England international recently stepped down as head coach of Surrey to take up the IPL role at CSK. His appointment comes as the franchise overhauls its coaching structure after missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.

With the November 15 retention deadline approaching, Zaheer and the ČSK management will also have to settle the team’s plans before the auction. The coaching changes signal a fresh start for the franchise as they look set to bring together familiar faces with fresh ideas in their quest for a sixth IPL title.
