India aim to seal New Zealand T20I series as Bhuvneshwar redeems Sooryavanshi’s eyes

India are one win away from sealing the T20I series against New Zealand, but the third match in Wellington on Tuesday, October 27 offers more than an opportunity to take an unassailable 3-0 lead. Led by Shreyas Iyer, India will be looking to maintain their winning momentum while also addressing several issues that have cropped up despite their impressive start.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be eager to rediscover his rhythm with the ball, while teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be looking to make a stronger impression after a disappointing outing in Christchurch.

India won the first two matches by four wickets each chasing targets of 226 and 181. Their batting depth repeatedly came to the rescue but the bowling unit struggled to contain New Zealand’s aggressive approach.

Meanwhile, the hosts have their own concerns with Matt Henry ruled out for the rest of the series and Lockie Ferguson unavailable for the Wellington match.

SOORYAVANSHI GETS ANOTHER PICK

Ishan Kishan’s absence opened the door for Sooryavanshi to make his mark. Kishan was ruled out of the third T20I after keeping the right adductor stress low during the opening series. His availability for the remaining matches remains uncertain as he continues his recovery.

Sooryavanshi, who could only bowl eight deliveries four times in the second T20I, will be eager to get this outing behind him. The 15-year-old has had limited opportunities since making his debut in July and a substantial contribution in Wellington would boost his chances of a longer spell with the team. It could also give the selectors a welcome dilemma when Kishan returns to contention.

If Kishan remains unavailable, Sooryavanshi could get more opportunities in the remaining matches, allowing him to gain valuable experience and show that he can handle the demands of the role.

Other Indian batsmen have already offered encouraging signs. Sanju Samson played a brilliant 67 in the opening match of the series, though he fell cheaply in the second match. Abhishek Sharma made brisk starts in both the matches, scoring 29 and 27 points respectively.

Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 in the opener while Tilak Varma came to India’s rescue in Christchurch with an unbeaten 51 off 26 balls after the visitors slumped to 70 for five. Naman Dhir also impressed as he smashed 42 off 15 balls in the first match and added 31 in the second. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s unbeaten 26 further highlighted India’s batting depth.

The challenge now is to turn those individual contributions into a more complete team performance, especially with the ball.

CAN BHUVNESHWAR FIGHT?

For Bhuvneshwar, the third T20I represents an opportunity to press the reset button. The experienced pacer conceded 99 runs in eight overs in the first two matches at an economic rate of 12.37, with one wicket being enough. Those numbers fall well short of the standards he has set throughout his career.

The 36-year-old returned to the Indian T20I set-up after almost four years as he enjoyed an impressive IPL 2026 campaign in which he took 28 wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, his comeback did not go as planned and the New Zealand batsmen repeatedly found ways to put him under pressure.

Bhuvneshwar has built his reputation on swing, control and ability to outthink batsmen, especially at the death. These qualities have made him one of India’s most reliable white-ball bowlers and he will look forward to rediscovering them in Wellington.

The task will not be easy against a New Zealand side that has shown little hesitation in attacking the Indian bowlers. Bhuvneshwar will have to make the most of whatever movement is on offer, tightening his lines and avoiding the short deliveries that have proved costly. A disciplined spell could help restore his confidence and strengthen his case for the remaining matches.

NEW ZEALAND FIRE BUT THE PULSE ATTACK INTERCEPTS

New Zealand’s batting has been a bright spot despite trailing in the series. Glenn Phillips led the charge in the opening T20I with an explosive unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, while Finn Allen and Bevon Jacobs also made valuable contributions. The hosts continued at a healthy pace in the second match but their bowlers struggled to defend the target as India completed another successful run chase.

Their task has been complicated by injuries and workload issues in the pace department. Henry was eliminated from the rest of the serieswhile Ferguson will miss the Wellington clash and is expected to return for the final two games.

New Zealand turned to the depth of their squad to cover the gaps. Matt Fisher has traveled as cover for the third T20I, Blair Tickner is set to join for the final three matches and Josh Clarkson will be available for the final two. Kyle Jamieson is an option in Wellington before returning to domestic duties at Canterbury.

With their speed resources stretched, New Zealand need their available bowlers to disrupt India’s deep batting line-up. Captain Mitchell Santner provided a boost in Christchurch with four wickets, but the rest of the attack must offer more support. Tighter lines and better execution at key stages will be vital if the hosts are to prevent India from wrapping up the series.

LOCATION AND WEATHER CONDITIONS OF WELLINGTON

The Wellington pitch is sporting an average score of around 165 in the 18 T20Is played there since 2016. The chasing teams have won 10 matches, so second batting should be the way forward for teams.

Winds with gusts of up to 55km/h are expected to blow in Wellington on the eve of the match. Although the wind is expected to ease slightly on Tuesday, it could still affect shooting, high catches and bowling plans. Rain is also expected, but conditions are expected to improve before the evening start.
