Rafael Nadal returned to the tennis court for an exhibition match on the Las Vegas Strip
Rafael Nadal is set to return to a tennis court in the United States for the first time since retiring from professional tennis, with the 22-time Grand Slam champion scheduled for an exhibition match in Las Vegas on February 27, 2027.
Nadal will headline The MGM Slam presented by Capital One at T-Mobile Arena, organizers announced Monday. It will be his first appearance in the United States since he retired in November 2024, ending a career that included 22 Grand Slam singles titles and a record 14 French Open crowns.
The Spaniard last played in Las Vegas in March 2024, when he faced compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition match at the same venue. The competition attracted a sell-out crowd and was broadcast worldwide on Netflix.
Nadal has since retired from professional tennis, although he recently returned to the court for the 10th anniversary of his tennis academy in Manacor, Mallorca. His upcoming appearance in Las Vegas will give fans another chance to watch him play, nearly two and a half years after his retirement.
‘I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING IN VEGAS AGAIN’
Nadal said he remembered the atmosphere at T-Mobile Arena from his previous visit and was looking forward to returning without the pretensions of the professional tour.
“I remember how impressive it was to feel the energy of a full arena in a city like Las Vegas,” Nadal said.
“After that match in 2024, I now come back at a different stage in my life, without the pressure of the tour, but with the same passion for the sport. I have always loved racing, and even though my professional career is over, that feeling will never go away.”
The former world number one thanked MGM Resorts and Capital One for inviting her to the event. He also talked about being able to play in front of fans who have followed him throughout his career.
“Being on the court again at T-Mobile Arena against one of the top players today is a great opportunity to enjoy tennis and give something back to the fans who have supported me for so many years,” he said.
“I hope everyone who comes has a great time and I’ll do my best to give them a night to remember.”
Organizers have yet to announce Nadal’s opponents, other players in the field or the format of the event in 2027. More details are expected in the coming weeks.
NADAL’S LAST MATCH IN LAS VEGAS
Nadal faced Alcaraz at the March 2024 Netflix Slamduring what became his final season on the professional tour. The exhibition brought together two generations of Spanish tennis, with Alcaraz emerging as one of the leading players in the men’s game.
Nadal struggled with injuries towards the end of his career and played only a limited number of tournaments in recent seasons. He announced his retirement in October 2024 and made his final appearance for Spain in the Davis Cup final in Malaga the following month.
His career included 14 French Open titles, four US Open crowns, two Wimbledon titles and two Australian Open trophies. He also won the singles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the doubles gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Nadal finished his career with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, making him one of the most successful players in the history of men’s tennis.
