CSK part ways with Michael Hussey in major coaching overhaul ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have parted ways with long-time batting coach Michael Hussey as the five-time champions continue a major overhaul of their facilities ahead of IPL 2027. The Australian’s exit marks the end of an eight-year stint in the coaching role, ending a significant chapter in his association with the franchise.

Hussey first joined CSK as a player in 2008 and represented the franchise in six seasons. After retiring from international cricket, he returned to the team as batting coach in 2018, working alongside head coach Stephen Fleming. Affectionately known as ‘Mr Cricket’, Hussey has played a key role in CSK’s success, with the franchise winning the 2018, 2021 and 2023 IPL titles during his coaching career.

CSK paid an emotional tribute to Hussey as he announced his decision to move on.

“You have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family since the first season in 2008,” the franchise said in a statement on social media.

“Your journey in yellow has been defined not only by the runs you’ve scored and the players you’ve mentored, but also by the dedication, humility and unwavering commitment you’ve brought to this franchise over the years.”

CSK concluded the message by saying, “Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister. Once a super king, always a super king.”

The franchise appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as the head coach following Fleming’s departure. Gareth Batty, who is leaving Surrey after leading the county to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024, has also joined CSK as an assistant coach for IPL 2027.

WHO ARE THE OTHERS LEAVING CSK?

Hussey is not the only prominent member of the previous CSK line-up to leave. Bowling coach Eric Simons has also parted ways with the franchise after being linked with the team since 2018. He is set to join Fleming’s coaching staff with the England Test team, while former fielding coach James Foster has also moved on.

CSK also parted ways with assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, physio Tommy Simsek and coach Greg King. Former India pacer Mohit Sharma has been brought in as the bowling coach as the franchise revamps its support staff.

The overhaul follows three unsuccessful seasons. After winning the title in 2023, CSK finished fifth in 2024, tenth in 2025 and eighth in 2026. The franchise will be hoping that a revamped coaching group under Zaheer will help restore consistency and bring the Super Kings back into title contention in 2027.
