Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday (October 26, 2026) ordered that the student union elections be held within 15 days of approval of the union constitution. However, with no assurance of the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Proctor, the two students continue their hunger strike.
Pursuant to an official order, the university revoked the suspensions and show-cause notices issued to students during the ongoing protest, while also asking the students to apologize for any defamatory remarks against the administration.
The order, issued by registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, also provides for the formation of a commission to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the protest period.
University students have been protesting for the reinstatement of their union since October 11. The situation escalated a day earlier on Sunday (October 25, 2026) when there were attempts to forcibly remove protesting students. After the suspension of classes, the water facilities on the campus were cut off and no entry or exit was allowed. Amid heavy police deployment, students still gathered in large numbers and staged a protest.
