When a humanoid robot fell during a Kung Fu China demo and lost part of its leg – What happened? Chinese Reactions on Social Media | Today’s news

Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics’ recently introduced humanoid robot, the H2-X, tripped while flipping sideways during a kung fu demonstration, causing part of its leg to separate.

According to the Global Times, the incident occurred on October 22 at the 2026 World Conference on Physical AI & Unitree Partner Ecosystem Summit held in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang Province.

The robot’s botched side flip is drawing mixed reactions on Chinese social media

The botched side flip drew mixed reactions on Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo. While some users stated that such errors should be minimized even though the robot was not yet a mass-produced product, others noted that these glitches were natural as technology progressed.

The incident sparked discussion, with one user noting that the accident should not be used to dismiss robotics technology as a whole, adding that there is room for improvement in motion algorithms and mechanical design. Another user called for improving the robot’s structural rigidity, and a third argued that the structural design should consider material strength and backup security along with speed, with thorough testing to ensure the product is safe and meets quality standards.

Here’s what we know about the H2-X robot

The humanoid robot was unveiled on October 21. Footage released by Unitree a day before the incident showed the robot kicking a car door, lifting the front of the vehicle and flipping after jumping from a platform roughly four meters high. Unitree said the H2-X was designed for security tasks and emergency rescue operations.

At a conference held on the same day as the incident, Unitree Robotics founder and CEO Wang Xingxing discussed the challenges of moving robots from demos to the real world. Wang said embodied intelligence could have its “ChatGPT moment” as early as next year, with advances in robots’ ability to understand and perform real-world tasks heralding a new phase for the industry.

He added: “Physical AI is showing signs of a breakthrough, most likely in the next one to two years or two to three years.”

At the conference, Wang noted that the company is also developing an artificial intelligence (AI) system that will allow humanoid robots to improve.

Other humanoid robot accidents during public appearances

This incident is not the first time a humanoid robot has suffered an accident during a public demonstration. In May, a humanoid robot in Shenzhen, China suffered a malfunction mid-performance while dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

The incident occurred at the Future Era robot show when a humanoid robot tripped over a step while dancing on stage. It briefly regained its balance and continued to perform before falling to the same spot, whereupon a human assistant appeared and dragged his motionless body off the stage.

In another incident at a sports day in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a robot fell during a martial arts demonstration as children ran onto the field to join it. The footage appeared to show the machine attempting kung fu kicks, causing the surrounding performers to move away cautiously.

Separately, video recorded at a show in Shaanxi province on Saturday, March 21 showed a Unitree robot accidentally punching a young boy in the face. The robot approached the audience as it waved its arms and hit the child as it turned around.
