Like Kerala, TN government should pass resolution to scrap SIR in State Assembly, says CPI (M) politburo member
Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo member G. Ramakrishnan on Sunday said Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay should move and pass a resolution in the State Legislative Assembly to scrap the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Addressing reporters after attending a free medical camp for construction workers in Vellore city, Mr. Ramakrishnan said the BJP-led Union government had used the SIR to delete around 13.5 million voters from the electoral rolls in the country. In this regard, barring the BJP, the entire opposition has united in demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. “The Tamil Nadu government led by Mr Vijay should pass a resolution against SIR in the State Assembly and for the re-enrollment of voters who have been struck off the electoral rolls,” he said.
The CPI (M) leader cited the example of the Kerala Legislative Assembly where the ruling Congress and opposition parties led by the Left Front unanimously passed a resolution demanding the scrapping of the SIR electoral rolls.
