Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wrote a massive T20 powerplay record in GT vs RR Qualifier 2

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added another record to his extraordinary IPL 2026 season during Rajasthan Royals’ Qualifier 2 match against Gujarat Titans, becoming the first batsman in T20 history to score 500 runs in a single tournament powerplay. The 15-year-old reached the milestone in Mullanpur as he continued a campaign that has already broken several batting records.

The latest milestone comes just days after the teenager smashed a breathtaking 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

GT vs RR Qualifier 2: UPDATE | SCORECARD

The 15-year-old hit the milestone during RR’s innings at Mullanpur, capping off some of the most explosive opening seasons ever seen in T20 cricket. Before Sooryavanshi’s feat, the record was held by David Warner, who scored 467 overs for Sunrisers Hyderabad during their IPL 2016 title-winning campaign.

Most powerplays will be played in a single T20 tournament:

  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (RR, IPL 2026) – 500+ runs
  • David Warner (SRH, IPL 2016) – 467 runs
  • Travis Head (SRH, IPL 2024) – 402 runs
  • Sai Sudharsan (GT, IPL 2025) – 402 runs
  • Adam Gilchrist (Deccan Chargers, IPL 2009) – 382 runs

HOW SOORYAVANSHI REACHED 500 RUNS

Unlike many of his innings this season, the start against Gujarat Titans was far from straightforward.

Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada seem to have done their homework on the teenager and repeatedly tested him with disciplined lines and lengths during the opening overs. For perhaps the first time in several matches, Sooryavanshi was forced to spend time in the crease before unleashing his attacking game.

His first six didn’t arrive until the 13th ball he faced.

GT’s strategy was clear. After watching Sooryavanshi dismantle SRH with a 29-ball 97 in the Eliminator, Gujarat’s main objective was to deny them momentum in the powerplay.

The plan looked promising at first.

Rajasthan Royals also suffered setbacks at the other end, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal 1 and Dhruv Jurel 7 in the opening overs. But Sooryavanshi remained undeterred.

The turning point came in the third game against Siraj.

With RR under pressure, the teenager struck, conceding 21 runs and immediately shifting the momentum back towards Rajasthan. Two boundaries between the last two deliveries of the over helped him get the landmark of 500 overs in the season.

At the time of writing, Sooryavanshi has scored 34 off 20 balls. By his own extraordinary standards, it was a fairly measured start. Yet even on a day when Gujarat Titans managed to keep it quieter than most teams this season, the teenager still found a way to create history.
