Dubai, known for gold and luxury, created not one, but two entries in the Guinness Book of Records – Have you heard about the 16.5 kg gold earrings? | Today’s news
Giant gold earrings have won two Guinness World Records titles in Dubai. The handmade earrings created by Joyalukkas Jewelery are called Mayura Sahasra which means ‘Thousand Peacocks’. The 22-carat gold pair weighs 16.514 kg and celebrates Dubai’s identity as the City of Gold.
The Guinness Book of Records recognized them as the heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings. Both titles have been officially verified, according to Gulf News.
The unveiling took place on October 24 at the Jewel of Joy in the Dubai Gold District. UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri unveiled the creation. The event was attended by jewelry store representatives and other dignitaries. The unveiling followed the recent showroom opening.
An official Guinness World Records judge presented certificates for both achievements. Al Marri received them along with Joyalukkas Group Chairman Dr. by Joy Alukkas and CEO John Paul Alukkas. The occasion celebrated both the ambitious design and the craftsmen who completed it.
Dr Joy described the earrings as a tribute to Dubai and its creators. He said the two titles brought pride to the family and its teams. He also appreciated the customers who have trusted the company for decades. Joyalukkas has teams working in 13 countries.
John Paul also discussed changing customer tastes and the company’s response. A third-generation entrepreneur, he said the demand for jewelery has changed since his grandfather started the business.
The company offers lightweight designs and jewelry in 22-karat and 18-karat gold. It also plans to introduce 14-carat jewelry.
The CEO told Gulf News that the idea inspired Dubai’s growth. He said Joyalukkas spent four decades in the UAE and watched its development.
Many Dubai records encouraged the company to contribute to the success through jewelry. He invited residents and visitors to view the earrings at the Jewel of Joy.
“We’ve been in the UAE for the last 40 years and we’ve seen the UAE and Dubai grow. We’ve seen a lot of records that Dubai has broken and we thought we should do something to give back to Dubai,” he said.
Design
The earrings measure 1.215 meters in length and 0.682 meters in diameter. A team of 55 skilled craftsmen spent 5840 hours creating them over several months.
The design draws inspiration from traditional jhumkas, the bell-shaped earrings associated with South Asian wedding jewelry. Its peacock theme reflects grace, pride and beauty in Indian culture. Fine details capture the look of bird feathers.
The name is also related to the legend of a divine peacock that dropped 1000 feathers. Each feather carried a prayer, wish or dream. This story forms part of the creature’s meaning, alongside its traditional design.
The earrings remain on permanent public display at the Jewel of Joy. Visitors can enter for free and see the craft in person. The showroom is open from 10am to 10pm and offers access to residents and tourists throughout the week.
