As the largest container vessel in the world, MSC Irina, operated by the Swiss giant giant of the Mediterranean (MSC), called in the international port of Vishinjam, it was a proud moment for the kerite Will Antony, Captain.
The Thrissur native has been naval since childhood. His father, late Palokkaran Antony, was a naval inspector based on Wellington Island, Kochi. Mr. Antony has a 29 -year -old career from the cadet to the world’s largest vessel, with 19 years exclusively in MSC. Currently, the MSC Irina, a series of six identical ultra -large container vessels (ULCV), is holding the main ship.
On the eve of the anchoring of the ship in Vishinjam, he told the Hindes that it was a mere passion and determination that helped him to get up through the rows. After his higher secondary education, he left home to become a sailor and before becoming a cadet in 1996, he made a diploma in maritime science.
Vessels to enlarge
Over the years, he has maneuver all types of vessels. He has served ULCVS since they were introduced in the MSC fleet. Mr. Antony said that the size and capacity of container ships would further increase, as huge vessels can transport more cargo in one voyage. Larger vessels also increase operating efficiency and cost efficiency, as carbon emissions of such vessels are relatively low compared to the cargo size they transport.
He said that he sailed many times through the territory that Pirates are devoted to. “Fortunately, I haven’t encountered them with any unwanted incidents.”
Mr. Antony said Vishinjam port offered huge opportunities for the economic leap for the country. “As a sailor, I would say that the project should materialize much earlier. Young people who want to attract sailing should first learn about life at sea and problems involved in the life of a sailor. They should work hard to achieve their goals and be excited about this work.
His wife Hilda and his son Benhail, a student of class IX, accompanied him on his voyage to Vishinjam. A few days earlier they performed in Singapore because his son had to restore his classes from June 2.
