The delay in the distribution of compensation was seriously influenced by many people who gave up their land for the Palakkad – Kozhikode Greenfield Highway. Several affected families continue to live in rented accommodation and fight prolonged uncertainty surrounding the release of promised help.
According to members, action committees have been waiting for more than 500 people to compensate for more than two years. Some of the landowners who lost their homes during the acquisition process have already turned to the court to deal with a disproportionate delay, they added.
“All affected families come from Pemann and Olavanna Panchayats. The distribution of compensation was stopped after complaints about discrepancies in previously paid to some landowners in the Malappuram and Kozhikode districts,” said a member of the local action committee from Olavann. He said that uncertainty persisted despite the intervention of representatives and officials of the income department.
V. Manoharan, one of the protesters of land owners, said the loss of their homes disrupted the lives of many families that planned to build or buy new houses using money for compensation. With a long -term delay, they remain in rented devices and are not sure when help comes.
Several traders indicated that they could initiate an indefinite protest looking for a quick solution to the problem. Only in Perumann only about 80 merchants were hit by a project of 121 km of road and their concerns about rehabilitation remain unaddimed, they said.
Meanwhile, the sources of the Ministry of Income said that the acquisition process is in its final phase in the district of Kozhikode and expressed the hope that technical problems related to the rehabilitation package will soon be resolved. However, they stated that legal disputes related to the previously distributed amount of compensation caused an unexpected delay throughout the process.
