Schools in Andhra Pradesh will organize an e-waste drive on October 28
The School Education Department of Andhra Pradesh will conduct the final activities of “Special Campaign 6 – E-Waste Collection” in all government and private schools and lower secondary schools across the state on October 28 under the Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE programme.
Director of School Education and State Project Officer-in-Charge of Samagra Shiksha A. Thameem Ansariya said on Saturday that the initiative is being implemented in accordance with Union Education Ministry guidelines to promote environmental awareness and responsible waste management among students.
Schools have been instructed to conduct a special quiz on e-waste management, reuse and safe disposal during the morning assembly on October 28. Directors are also required to submit answers to questions available on the designated web portal through the prescribed link.
Students will be encouraged to bring unused or damaged electronic items from home, including old devices, cables, chargers and mobile phones, and deposit them in the designated black boxes in the e-waste collection corners of the schools.
The collected material must be sent in the prescribed manner to Mandal Education Office for collection by authorized recyclers. The ministry has directed schools to hand over e-waste only to recyclers or renovators approved by the Central Pollution Control Board or the State Pollution Control Board. Transfer to unauthorized scrap dealers is strictly prohibited.
Officials said authorized recyclers have been identified at the field level and their contact details have been shared with the authorities concerned. Schools have also been advised to follow safety precautions and ensure that students and staff do not dismantle dangerous electronic items such as batteries, CRT monitors, LED bulbs and CFL bulbs.
All government and private schools have to upload the details of collected e-waste on the Eco Clubs portal through their respective Eco Clubs coordinators by October 27.
Ms. Ansariya called upon the principals, teachers, parents, students and coordinators of the eco club to actively participate in the campaign. The aim of this initiative is to instill environmental responsibility in students and promote the safe collection, handling and disposal of e-waste.
