When security slips through a gaping hole
Scary feeling: Vast areas of Taramani MRTS station remain unused and the station has become a hub for anti-socials. | Photo credit: B. VELANKANNI RAJ
When the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) was proposed for Chennai in the 1970s, it was envisioned as the country’s first elevated mass transit corridor, years before metros were even thought of in India. In anticipation of good patronage, huge railway stations were suddenly built along with various amenities for passengers such as escalators, lifts and toilets.
The full MRTS service from the beach to Velachery was built in phases and was launched in November 2007. This year it was extended to Mount St. Thomas. The MRTS project, including the extension, has suffered delays of several decades.
