Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla, Founder and Chief Neurosurgeon Dr. Rao’s Hospital–International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN), Guntur, presented research on complex craniovertebral junction surgery at the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) centenary meeting in London.
In a statement on Saturday, Dr. Patibandla said an international scientific meeting was held from October 12 to 16, bringing together neurosurgical experts to discuss advances in neurological care and surgical techniques.
His presentation, titled “Transnasal Endoscopic Odontoidectomy for Failed Posterior Craniovertebral Fusion: Salvage Decompression and Outcomes in 6 Complex Cases,” explored a minimally invasive approach in patients who had persistent compression despite prior posterior stabilization surgery.
The craniovertebral junction connects the skull to the upper cervical spine. Compression in this area can compromise brainstem and spinal cord function. The endoscopic technique allows surgeons to access the odontoid process through the nasal passages to relieve pressure from the front.
The research analyzed six complex cases and highlighted the importance of individualized surgical planning, careful assessment and evaluation of neurological outcomes.
The findings contribute to international discussions on minimally invasive neurosurgery and complex spinal disorders, he added.
