BJP seeks all-party meeting on El Nino impact
Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to immediately convene an all-party meeting on the impact of the El Nino climate phenomenon, consult relevant experts and prepare a realistic assessment of the losses suffered by farmers.
“We have no intention of politicizing El Nino. But the government must immediately convene an all-party meeting, seek expert advice and develop a comprehensive strategy to deal with the situation,” he said on Friday.
In an informal interaction with the media at the state office on Friday, he accused the chief minister of canceling a proposed all-party meeting on El Nino and traveling to Delhi in a special plane, alleging that political considerations surrounding Rahul Gandhi took precedence over pressing concerns of the state.
He further charged that government meetings held in the name of El Niño were being used to discuss the upcoming MLC elections and “Delhi politics” instead of focusing on the potential agricultural crisis and farmers’ welfare.
Mr. Rao advised the state government to first submit a comprehensive report detailing actual damages and realistic financial demands. The Center will consider the report and provide necessary assistance, he said in view of the government’s plan to seek ₹20,000 crore central assistance.
The party’s national general secretary Sunil Bansal will soon convene a meeting to name likely names for the MLC polls and forward them to the party’s national parliament election committee for a final decision, he added.
Full support
Meanwhile, the BJP has announced its full support for the Jawaharnagar dump site relocation demand and the proposed ‘padayatra’ by Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender. In a preparatory meeting, Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy said that the BJP state president along with its MPs, MLAs, MLCs and other party leaders would all participate in the movement.
Launching a trench attack on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, he said the very people who ensured his political hiatus — electing him as an MP and supporting his rise to the top post — are now the ones suffering badly because of the landfills. Residents of the area face severe hardships including health problems; with around 10,000 metric tonnes of waste accumulating daily over the past three decades, he said.
Mr. Rajender said the time had come to demand the government to find a suitable solution, which was possible by demanding transfer of the landfill and closure of the existing facility. The MP vowed to continue to pressurize the government until justice is served to the affected people and a permanent solution to the landfill issue is reached.
