Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has been hospitalized after collapsing in training

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing while watching the reserve club train. The 40-year-old was battling a viral illness earlier in the week which saw him miss Bayern’s pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Arsenal. However, Kompany returned to the goalpost on Wednesday to oversee the match.

In Kompany’s absence, his coaching staff will oversee training and matchday operations.

“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during FC Bayern’s amateur training session,” the Bundesliga club said in a statement.

“The coach of the first team watched the training of the second team.”

“The company will undergo a thorough examination at the hospital and remain under medical care.

“His coaching staff will manage training and match operations for the time being.”

Bayern face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with the club yet to play their next league game. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said that Kompany’s health is the club’s top priority at the moment and they will do everything for his speedy recovery.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything in our power to ensure his speedy recovery,” Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said.

“Vinnie will get all the medical care and support he needs and all the time he needs.

“His duties will be taken over by his coaching team, in whom we have full confidence. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

In Kompany’s absence from Tuesday’s media duties, assistant coach Aaron Danks joined the press ahead of the Arsenal game.

Bayern are currently on top of the Bundesliga table with 14 points from six matches so far. They are level with Borussia Dortmund, but they are at the top thanks to their big goal difference.
