AP/PTI(AP10_22_2026_000306B) South Africa’s innings and 31-run victory over Australia in the second Test at Gqeberha made the race for the World Test Championship (WTC) final more competitive.Although Australia remain at the top of the table, the defeat prevents them from extending their lead and gives other teams including India some hope.Australia has a points percentage (PCT) of 75.00, while New Zealand is second with 72.22 and South Africa is third with 66.67.

What India must do

India are currently fifth in the order with seven Tests remaining in the cycle – two against New Zealand and five against Australia at home. To finish with a PCT of 60, India need to collect 62 points from these matches and cannot afford to lose more than two Tests.

WTC standings after South Africa’s win over Australia

However, even a strong finish may not guarantee qualification. India also need at least two each from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to drop points in the remaining matches. Their upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia will therefore be crucial to their chances of reaching the finals at The Oval in London next year.

Bangladesh also in the race

Bangladesh, currently fourth, remain in contention for a place in the finals. Four of the six remaining Tests will be played at home, giving them an opportunity to pick up valuable points. They will have to make the most of the home conditions and hope that the teams above them drop points. South Africa’s win kept the competition open, but India still face a tough task and will need consistent performances and favorable results elsewhere to reach the final.
