A 19-year-old drunk driver behind the wheel of an SUV crashed into a car and rammed into a power pole at Peerzadiguda on the Hyderabad-Warangal National Highway on Thursday. The impact caused the couple’s car to overturn several times, injuring both occupants.

The accident took place around 6.30 am near pillar No. 57 of the Uppal–Narapally elevated corridor in Medipally. The injured have been identified as Sai Shiva (30) and his wife Meghana (28), who were traveling in a Hyundai i10 from LB Nagar towards Narsampet in Warangal district.

According to Medipally Inspector D. Jalender Reddy, the driver of the SUV, identified as Akun Sabharwal, 19, recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 238 mg per 100 ml, almost eight times the legal limit of 30 mg per 100 ml. He was also found to be driving without a valid driver’s license, with the SUV being operated with a temporary registration number (TR) and a false number plate.

The SUV, traveling at high speed, hit the i10 from behind near Peerzadiguda. The SUV then hit a power pole, which fell on top of the vehicle. The injured couple was taken to a private hospital in Chaitanjapuri for treatment.

The officer said the incident involved as many as 10 violations of the Motor Vehicle Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including drunken driving, speeding and driving without a valid driving licence.

“The accident took place in the early hours of the morning when the roads were relatively empty due to festival holidays. The consequences could have been much more serious with possible fatal consequences if the collision had occurred during rush hour,” said a police officer.

The Medipally police registered a case against Sabharwal and the owner of the vehicle, Mangilal, who was accused of allowing a person without a valid driving license to drive the SUV. Akun was arrested. Further investigation is underway.
