CIFT provides technical support to Andaman and Nicobar administration
The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Kochi, will provide technical support to the Andaman and Nicobar administration to promote traditional fish products and standardize fishing boat designs.
As part of this initiative, CIFT has entered into two consultancy agreements with the Fisheries Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration at Sri Vijaya Puram, according to the statement.
A key part of the collaboration is supporting Geographical Indication (GI) label applications for two traditional fish products: Chilled Andaman Coral Trout (dollar fish) and Nicobari Thoharango (smoked and dried).
As part of the first consultation, CIFT will conduct nutritional profiling and shelf life studies, develop standardized safety protocols and provide technical training to local and tribal producers.
Under the second consultancy, ICAR-CIFT will provide 30 standardized designs for fishing boats of various sizes and categories, including motor and mechanized boats. The proposals will include revised drawings, technical specifications and cost estimates, the statement said.
The collaboration aims to promote traditional fish products, improve livelihood opportunities for local and tribal communities and promote technology-based sustainable fisheries development in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
