Immersion of Durga idol starts in Kurnool

Industries and Commerce Minister TG Bharath Gupta said that Goddess Durga Navaratri celebrations in Kurnool town will be held in a grand spirit and will acquire a unique identity in the whole of South India.

Accompanied by former Rajya Sabha member TG Venkatesh, Mr. Bharath started the immersion ceremony of Durga Mata idols at Durga Ghat on the banks of Tungabhadra river near Sankalbagh town.

The minister lit the ceremonial lamp, followed by his participation in the ‘Ravana Vadha’ (symbolic killing of Ravana) event. Later “Ganga Aarti” was performed and the immersion process was started by immersing the first idol of the Goddess.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bharath said that while the celebrations of Goddess Durga Mata started with just one idol, now it is being celebrated on a grand scale across the city by installing many idols. He noted that the active participation of devotees and public support for the celebration of Goddess Durga Navaratri in Kurnool is increasing every year.

He said the immersion ceremonies were organized on a grand scale under the aegis of Geeta Prachara Sangham, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and TGV Kalakshetram. He further added that his organization, the TGV Group, took pride in ensuring that the celebrations were held with great splendor every year.

Former Raya Sabha member Venkatesh said the Durga immersion festival in Kurnool serves as a beautiful blend of culture and tradition. He pointed out that Kurnool was the first city in South India to start Goddess Durga Navaratri celebrations 25 years ago, a practice unheard of elsewhere in the region at the time.

He explained that the rituals were performed with strict adherence to traditional customs for 10 days, culminating in an immersion ceremony. Starting with just five to 10 idols, the celebrations of Goddess Durga have grown significantly over the years and now there are more than 250 idols installed around the city.

He added that Kurnool has earned a reputation for hosting the most significant Navaratri celebrations in the state, second only to Vijayawada. Mr. Venkatesh prayed that the blessings of the Goddess always remain with the people of the city.
