Here’s why Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party is disbanding its entire Kannauj district unit and removing several officials | Today’s news
Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has reportedly disbanded his entire Kannauj district unit and removed several office bearers.
Why did SP disband its entire Kannauj district unit?
The event came after the party’s program failed to attract the crowd expected by its leadership.
According to News18, state president Shyamlal Pal organized a PDA (PDA refers to Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak — Backward Classes) working conference at the SP office in Kannauj.
What was planned as a workers’ rally instead became a point of contention after videos from the venue showed a striking discrepancy between the number of leaders on stage and people in the audience, the report added.
A large number of seats on the program remained empty. A video clip that surfaced on social media showed party leaders sitting on a dais with relatively few workers in front of them.
Political significance
The dissolution of the entire Kannauj district unit of the SP has significance as the seat is represented by Lok Sabha MP and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and was one of the most important constituencies associated with his family.
Akhilesh and his wife Dimple Yadav both represented the seat at different times.
The program organized by the state president failed to attract a substantial gathering in the constituency of the SP chief himself.
What went wrong in Kannauj?
According to a News18 report, local leaders and office bearers attended the conference, but the expected grassroots mobilization was missing.
The incident has also created an impression in the local organization that some leaders are considering their proximity to Akhilesh Yadav as an advantage.
According to a report surrounding the incident, it sometimes created a divide between influential local leaders and ordinary party workers, News18 reported.
The Kannauj meeting exposed this disconnect in a very visible way.
The decision of the SP leadership to disband the entire district organization indicates that it saw the problem as bigger than the performance of a few individuals.
