The Ayudha Puja festivities left piles of garbage in several parts of Tiruchi, prompting the Tiruchi Corporation to intensify cleaning operations.

According to corporation sources, around 226 tonnes of additional waste was collected between October 16 and 20. On average, about 470 tons of waste is produced in the city every day.

Piles of garbage, including discarded and unsold plantains, were found on Thanjavur Road, Singarathope, NSB Road, Big Bazaar Street, Chinnakadai Street, Nandi Koil Street and Sathara Veedhi in Srirangam, especially near temples and markets.

Heber Road, Eda Street, Woraiyur Market, Gandhi Market and Panchavarna Swami Temple Street in Zones I and V have been identified as major places of waste generation during the festival.

Apart from the routine garbage collection, the corporation has deployed around 35 night sanitation workers and seven light commercial vehicles for special cleaning.

A group of workers engaged in clean-up operations on Monday evening, with another group continuing to work until Tuesday afternoon. The teams concentrated mainly on main roads and streets, market places and around temples.

The official said the volume of waste generated in the city is expected to remain high till Wednesday as residents usually dispose of dried leaves and plantain plants for a few days after Ayudha Puja.
