Banks are not closed on October 21 everywhere in the country. The Reserve Bank of India holiday list shows closures only in some cities. The day is marked for Vijaya Dasami, Durga Puja (Dasain) and Maha Dashami.

Banks like SBI, HDFC and ICICI are closed on this day in eight cities including Agartala, Bengaluru, Gangtok and Guwahati. Kochi, Kolkata, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram also have a holiday today. RBI designates each of them as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Banks remain open in other RBI-listed cities. These include Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad. Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Jaipur, Lucknow and Patna are also open.

All these cities had their Dussehra festival on 20 October. Customers in these cities can visit branches as usual. Before going to a branch, check your city.

On October 20, banks were closed in most cities on the list. Only Gangtok and Imphal were not marked. This day was for Dussehra, Maha Navami, Ayudha Pooja and Durga Puja.

Banks were also closed on October 20 in cities like Bengaluru, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram. In fact, banks in Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata, Kochi and Guwahati were also closed on October 19.

Are the banks closed for the rest of the week?

The RBI list shows several holidays for the rest of this week. Thursday 22 October is a public holiday only in Gangtok. The occasion is Durga Puja (Dasain). Banks in all other cities listed remain open.

Friday 23 October is also a holiday only in Gangtok. It is again for Durga Puja (Dasain). Branches in other cities should operate normally.

Saturday, October 24 is different. RBI notes that all scheduled and non-scheduled banks have public holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays. The 24th is the fourth Saturday in October. So banks will be closed all over the country on that day. Then October 25th will also be off because it’s a Sunday.

Looking ahead to next week

Monday, October 26 brings another round of closures. The occasion is Laxmi Puja, Accession Day and Maharishi Valmiki’s birthday. Banks will be closed in Agartala, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Jammu. Shimla and Srinagar will also be closed.
