Iga Swiatek sinks to a new low, after 7 years she does not qualify for the WTA finals

Iga Swiatek suffered a major setback after withdrawing from the Ningbo Open due to a lingering left thigh injury, ending her hopes of qualifying directly for the 2026 WTA Finals. The six-time Grand Slam champion needed a strong performance in China to secure a place at the season-ending Indian Wells tournament.

It is the first time since 2019 that Swiatek will miss qualifying for the WTA Finals. Although she qualified in 2020, that edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Polish star’s only remaining route into this year’s edition is as a substitute should a qualified player opt out.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw from the tournament. I have had an ongoing problem with my left thigh in recent weeks and I feel that taking time to rest and recover is the right decision.”

SWIATEK’S INJURY PROBLEMS IN WUHAN

Swiateka’s physical struggles were evident during her Wuhan Open campaign last week. The former world number one advanced to the semi-finals, where she faced compatriot and childhood friend Maja Chwalinska, but she struggled with a left thigh injury that affected her movement around the court.

Swiatek took a 5-3 lead in the opening set and held two set points before Chwalinska fought back. The Pole was treated and continued with a bandaged thigh, but eventually lost 5-7, 1-6. Despite advice from her physiotherapist to retire, she decided to finish the match.

The injury has now forced Swiatek to prioritize recovery over her bid to reach the WTA Finals. She needed at least a quarter-final appearance in Ningbo to stay in contention for the final qualifying spot, currently held by Karolína Muchová. Her withdrawal ended that opportunity.

Swiatek, who won the WTA Finals in 2023, endured a difficult season by her standards. At the biggest tournaments, she tried to maintain consistency, at no Grand Slam this year did she manage to advance past the quarterfinals.

With hopes of direct qualification, Swiatek must now focus on recovering from her injury and preparing for next season. It remains to be seen whether he will appear as an alternate at the WTA Finals.
