55 tonnes of mislabeled food products worth ₹ 33.94 lakh seized from food manufacturing units in Hyderabad

The Telangana Standards Authority of Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) has seized 55 tonnes of mislabelled food products worth ₹33.94 lakh from the manufacturing units of Sahil Foods located at Premavatipet near Katedan area of Hyderabad following inspections which revealed several food safety violations.
Enforcement teams inspected five manufacturing units of Sahil Foods, a snack and snack company, on October 19. Following the inspections, the licenses and registrations of four units were suspended and the units were ordered to cease trading.
Inspections revealed several hygiene deficiencies, including dusty and poorly maintained machinery, production conveyors clogged with food waste and inadequate ventilation. Officials also found some food handling workers chewing gutka or pan masala while working, food waste strewn all over the premises and synthetic food coloring stored in uncleaned buckets.
Licensing lapses were also found at the units, with some food categories being produced without the required endorsements on their Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licences. Officials found that records of production and sales were not kept. The products were packaged with a declared shelf life of three months, but the units had no record of shelf life studies to support the claim.
Several food products were stored directly on the floor instead of on pallets, while food product test records and water analysis reports were not kept, according to the news release. In addition to seizing 55 tons of mislabeled food products, enforcement teams collected 11 samples of food products for laboratory analysis for suspected adulteration.
