Delhi Weather Today: IMD predicts rain, thunderstorms and strong winds; the temperature can drop by 7°C | Today’s news
After rain and thundershowers brought relief from the intense heat across Delhi-NCR on Thursday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more humid and windy weather in the region today.
According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad are expected to experience cloudy skies, scattered rainfall, thundershowers and strong winds as the new period of pre-monsoon activity continues in North India.
The forecast comes after several parts of Delhi received heavy showers on Thursday, while dust storms and gusty winds lashed neighboring NCR cities, reducing visibility and disrupting traffic in several areas.

What is the weather forecast for Delhi today?
The IMD said the current rain and thunderstorm activity will continue in Delhi-NCR till May 31.
Today, residents can expect:
- Cloudy all day
- Scattered rain in few parts of Delhi-NCR
- Thunderstorm activity during the day and evening
- Strong gusty winds in isolated areas
- Relatively cooler weather compared to earlier this week
- The weather system is expected to keep temperatures below levels seen during recent heatwave-like conditions.
Thunderstorm activity may increase
Forecasters indicated that storm activity could intensify today.
“Thunderstorm activity has already started over northern parts of Rajasthan and is expected to extend to Delhi by evening and continue overnight,” Skymet Weather’s Mahesh Palawat told PTI.
He added that the intensity of the storms is likely to increase on Friday before the weather system gradually moves west.
“The intensity of storms is likely to increase on Friday and the spell is expected to continue till May 30, after which the weather system is likely to move towards Gujarat between May 30 and 31,” Palawat said.
According to him, the current spell of rains may be stronger than the pre-monsoon showers that Delhi witnessed earlier this month and in April.

“The current period of pre-monsoon rains is likely to be stronger than the pre-monsoon showers witnessed in Delhi earlier this month and in April, leading to widespread rainfall activities across the city,” Palawat said.
Why does it rain in Delhi in May?
Meteorologists attribute the changing weather pattern to multiple systems cooperating over northern India.
Palawat said the current weather activity is driven by a western disturbance over the hills, an induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining areas and winds from the moisture-laden Bay of Bengal.
The combination of these systems created favorable conditions for widespread thunderstorms and rainfall over Delhi-NCR.

Temperatures are likely to drop
One of the biggest takeaways from the latest forecast is the expected drop in temperatures.
The IMD has predicted that temperatures in Delhi-NCR could drop by around 5 to 7 degrees Celsius after May 29. The drop is expected to provide continued relief from the intense heat that has hit the region over the past week.
Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by June 3 at the latest. The arrival of the monsoon in Delhi is currently expected around June 27, though meteorological agencies will continue to monitor developments in the coming weeks.
