The removal of the seabed remains was washed up along the unprotected coastal regions of the Kozhikode district within a few days after the beginning of the monsoon, which must only start, allegedly to devise an action plan because of the failure of the authorities. Several coastal inhabitants pass through a tormenting time with a pile of waste, mostly containing plastic garbage and other decaying materials.

“About 20 families are in a difficult situation with a huge pile of waste remaining along the coast in Purankara near Vadakary. There is no step in handling these stinking materials even after visiting several local administrators,” said M. Ayisha, resident. She added that the stink of waste materials makes it difficult to cook food.

Complaints related to washed residues increase from coastal areas where the construction of the seabed walls has been waiting for several years. Although the funds have recently been sanctioned for covering some of the most vulnerable sections, unfavorable weather conditions and the threat of marine erosion is likely to postpone works.

“There are even medical waste, broken fishing nets, plastic toys, discarded napkins and huge bundles of plastic bags in washed sea debris. He added that residents could not solve the crisis without the support of local administrators.

Some of the unprotected coastal areas in Kozhikode also witnessed dangerous threats of pollution from seabed. The authorities have evaluated on the Toppayil beach. The decomposed degradable waste was also washed into several places ashore.

Meanwhile, the Socitwa mission said that the matter would be alerted by the District Administration for a massive action with the support of various local administrators, government and NGOs. It would also be considered the possibility of carrying out the coastal cleaning unit in the affected areas, he added.
