Telangana Urban Transport Adviser NVS Reddy on Thursday stressed the need to introduce a large number of electric buses to curb the rise in the number of private vehicles leading to congestion and rising pollution levels, along with the expansion of the Metro Rail.
Mr Reddy said Indian cities were repeating the mistakes made by developed countries by prioritizing car-centric infrastructure over people-centric mobility solutions and pedestrian facilities. He was speaking at the National Symposium on ‘Sustainable Transport for Equitable, Efficient and Resilient Infrastructure in India’ held at BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus on the occasion of Foundation Day of Transport Research Group of India.
The former Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) urged professors and researchers from BITS and other leading institutions to study the ground reality of traffic problems in Indian cities and come up with practical and workable solutions.
Pointing to India’s socio-economic conditions and political constraints, he said tough measures such as congestion charges, restrictions on car ownership, high parking charges, heavy traffic fines and dedicated bus lanes may not be feasible.
Instead, he emphasized the need to focus on intelligent transport systems, digital solutions and applications that improve first- and last-mile connectivity, with seamless integration across metro rail, electric buses and other energy-efficient public transport systems. According to a press release, BITS Pilani Hyderabad Director Prof. Dharmarajan Sriram and faculty members.
