The Karnataka State Police Grievance Bureau has urged the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) to issue strict guidelines prohibiting police personnel from running fake or anonymous social media accounts and posting derogatory comments against government decisions, departmental orders and senior officers.
In a letter dated October 15, authority member Mohan Kumar Danappa said some police officers and staff were allegedly hiding their identities by using fictitious names, including those of freedom fighters, to post objectionable and negative comments on various social media platforms.
He said such accounts were used to criticize government decisions, ministerial orders, circulars and official directives issued by senior police officers. Some employees also allegedly posted offensive and defamatory content, commented on the posts of the chief minister, ministers, elected representatives and official government accounts on social media, and publicly exposed internal affairs of the ministry.
Terming these activities as unauthorized and against the rules of conduct, Mr. Danappa called for the issue to be taken seriously.
The authority has directed the social media monitoring cell to monitor such activities and initiate suo motu cases against employees who post such objectionable, defamatory or defamatory comments.
The letter urged the department to initiate strict disciplinary action under relevant rules and provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and other laws against employees caught engaging in such activities.
